Everyone goes through a dinosaur phase at some point. I know I used to spend hours talking to my friends about which dinosaur was the biggest, the coolest, or the strongest. However, with the rise of movies about dinosaurs, these debates can become more visual.
The Giganotosaurus is larger than the Indominus Rex in weight, with the Indominus being about T-Rex sized. However, the Indominus Rex would be considered larger using other metrics like height and length. However, it's difficult to give a clear answer because the Indominus Rex is fictional.
This article will detail which of these two dinosaurs is bigger and which dinosaurs are stronger than Indominus. Keep reading to find out more!
The Indominus Rex gained popularity after its appearance in the 2015 Jurassic World movie, where it was described as mainly being part T-Rex and part Velociraptor.
The Indominux Rex was not a real dinosaur. Although its appearance in theJurassic World movie was exciting due to the dinosaur’s size, speed, and intelligence, it’s an entirely fictional creature.
While we don't know every dinosaur that ever walked the earth, as of right now, no dinosaurs like the Indominus Rex have ever existed.
That means that any comparisons are based exclusively on the general sizes given by the Jurassic World movie. Namely, the dinosaur's size mostly comes from its T-Rex side.
Giganotosaurus, on the other hand, is another matter entirely.
The Giganotosaurus was a real dinosaur. The fossils for this particular dinosaur have been found in Argentina, allowing researchers to figure out its general size and weight, which, as its name implies, was gigantic.
Even though the Indominus Rex isn't a real dinosaur, there is enough information available to be able to, hypothetically, determine who is bigger between it and the Giganotosaurus.
The Indominus Rex was roughly T-Rex sized, one of the dinosaur species used in its creation.
However, according to the in-movie characters, this new dinosaur did grow to be slightly taller and longer than its T-Rex cousins.
Generally speaking, Giganotosaurus is bigger than the fictional Indominus Rex. However, it depends on what measurement you use to consider one dinosaur "bigger" than the other. In sheer weight, Giganotosaurus beats the Indominus Rex. Indominus Rex, though, would have been taller if it had been real.
Weight is an obvious metric to decide a winner as, in a fight, weight will often prove to be a creature's most significant advantage. The Giganotosaurus weighed in at an impressive 8000 kg (17637 lbs) compared to the T-Rex's 7000 kg (15432 lbs).
While there's no specific information regarding its weight, even considering the Indominus Rex's slightly increased size, it's doubtful that its weight would have been greater than the Giganotosaurus.
The Indomins Rex does win in the Height category.
According to officially licensed Jurassic World material, the Indominus Rex could reach over 5 meters (around 17 ft). On the other hand, the Giganotosaurus would have seemed tiny in comparison, coming in at only 3.6 meters (12 ft) in height.
If your metric for deciding who is bigger, then, in this round, the Indominus would win.
Even regarding length, the Indominus would be considered the winner. However, this measurement isn't as cut and dry as the others.
The Indominus Rex was designed to reach a length of 13 meters (over 42 ft). Instead, while longer than the Indominus Rex's T-Rex cousins, the Giganotosaurus reached a length of 12.5 meters (41 ft).
Since these two numbers are relatively similar, it's possible that, had the Indominus Rex been a real dinosaur, the actual distance in length would have been hard to notice.
It's also worth noting that, since paleontologists are limited in their potential specimens when coming up with sizes, it's possible Giganotosaurus could have reached slightly longer lengths.
It's difficult to say how many of the many species of enormous dinosaurs that existed would be stronger than the Indominus Rex. That's because the only evidence we have to figure out the answer to this question is footage from films and video games, as well as human speculation.
In the world where Indominus Rex exists, a few species could be considered "stronger" than this dinosaur. (By stronger, I mean dinosaurs that were shown to beat the Indominus physically.)
That means merely outsmarting it the way the humans or the film version of Velociraptors might have doesn't count.
However, based on what we know about dinosaurs and what the film showed, a few different dinosaurs could be considered stronger than Indominus Rex.
Dinosaurs that might have been stronger than Indominus Rex include the following:
Let’s look at each of these in more detail.
T-Rex is the clear first choice in who is stronger than Indominus Rex.
That is simply because the only Indominus to exist in the Jurassic World universe was defeated by a T-Rex.
Though Indominus is technically the larger dinosaur of the two, its hybrid genetics don't grant it the same advantages a T-Rex has.
The T-Rex has a mighty jaw and is extremely muscular, giving it the upper hand in a fight.
The second dinosaur that could be considered stronger than Indominus is the Mosasaurus.
In the movie, this dinosaur is the one that brought the hybrid dinosaur to its end.
The Mosasaurus is a water-bound dinosaur, whereas the Indominus dwells on land, which means a confrontation between the two would likely be rare.
However, if it were to happen, there's no reason to believe that the Mosasaurus wouldn't be stronger.
In a battle without a clear environmental advantage, it's likely the Mosasaurus would use its greater size and length to overpower its opponent.
The Ankylosaurus is the last installment in this list of dinosaurs that would be stronger than Indominus. This may seem like a strange addition to the list to people who have seen the movie.
However, it's not without its reasons.
The Ankylosaurus is covered in spiny armor, which already functions to keep it from being prime prey for many carnivores.
However, that's not the only survival tactic this herbivore has.
The Ankylosaurus is extraordinarily muscular and weighs as much or more than the Indominus Rex. That means it has thousands of kilograms of weight behind it when it uses its tail to ward off predators.
There's no reason to believe that this dinosaur wouldn't be able to hold its own and even beat an Indominus in a strength test if it came down to one.
While the Indominus Rex was a work of pure fiction, its size has left people wondering if it would have reigned supreme in the dinosaur world. As far as size is concerned, it depends.
The Giganotosaurus was a heavier dinosaur, though the Indominus would be larger in height and length. However, as far as strength is concerned, many other dinosaurs could be considered on par or stronger than this hybrid creature.
Unfortunately, there are no actual Indominus fossils to study, so these theories are purely speculative.
