The zenith of a star is the position when it’s considered to be directly above the person looking at it. While there are tools that can be used to calculate this position for different stars, it’s not as exact as it seems. This is because the Earth and stars are constantly moving.

However, the definition of a zenith includes two parts that don’t always coincide.
Since it can be considered to be when a star is directly above something, that means that a star’s zenith can be deemed to be slightly different depending on what you’re considering it in relation to.
If you are attempting to find a star’s zenith in relation to yourself, it will be in a slightly different position than if you are trying to locate a star’s peak in relation to a nearby landmark.
However, if you consider that a star’s zenith is when it would form a 90° angle with the ground, there is, in theory, less room for change.
Don’t get too caught up in these details, however. A star’s zenith is considered to be more of an “imaginary” concept than a concrete one.
By that, I mean that, since the Earth and stars are constantly moving, and because stars are so far away, it would be near impossible to take exact measurements without extremely powerful equipment.
Due to this, it’s generally understood that, while you can find a star’s approximate zenith, it’s likely not exact and is, at best, a ballpark figure.
There are different ways you can find a star’s zenith, to varying degrees of exactness.
You can use a start wheel to find a star’s zenith or other star location calculators online. You can just use your eyes and guess when a star is directly above you or use your latitude to calculate it.
Finding a star’s zenith can be as easy or as complicated as you want it to be.
The simplest way to figure out if a star has reached its zenith point is simply to guess.
This method is fast and easy.
All you have to do is stand under the stars, look up, and try to pinpoint a star that is directly above you.
This is the least precise option as it can be altered by minute details like the angle you’re looking up at or if you’re standing on a completely level surface.
However, this is also, perhaps, the most “human” way of finding a star’s zenith.
This method doesn’t work as well if you’re trying to locate the zenith of a particular star unless it’s a star that is particularly recognizable (for example, the North Star).
A star wheel is a sort of map of the stars.
However, unlike most paper maps, star wheels can be adjusted because they allow for how the Earth and stars move.
In fact, because the Earth’s rotation follows a relatively predictable cycle, star wheels can be adjusted based on the date of the year and the standard time you’re going to be observing the sky.
When you’ve set these coordinates, the wheel will show you what the stars will look like.
By adjusting the wheel to represent your sky best, you can discover what stars are supposed to be at their zenith on any given night.
However, because printed star wheels are based on stable celestial bodies, they won’t account for any new stars that have been discovered or become visible.
That means that, while much more exact than just looking up at the sky, there is some room for error in these calculations.
On the bright side, you don’t have to purchase a star wheel, and you can make one yourself that will likely be just as accurate as any you might be able to find elsewhere for sale.
Some online calculators attempt to do the work for you by doing the latitude-based math that can be difficult to grasp.
If you go through the process of doing the math, either yourself or with a calculator, this will most likely give you an exact measurement to figure out a star’s zenith.
However, this way is the most accurate only if done correctly.
If you make even a small mistake in your calculations, you might risk your results being even more inaccurate than they would be using either of the other two methods I’ve mentioned.
For most people, finding a star’s zenith today might just be for fun. However, there’s a reason why there are calculations to determine the approximate location of a star’s zenith. Navigation is one of them.
For thousands of years, the stars were used by travelers, specifically sailors, to determine direction and location, particularly when no other landmarks were present.
This is true even for the zenith of a star.
Sailors would expertly track stars and their locations to determine their ship’s direction.
Being able to determine if a star they’d been using to help guide them was at its zenith would help ensure that they were heading in the right direction.
So, even though today we have other methods of knowing where we are and where we’re going, the star zeniths at one point played a crucial role in helping travelers find their way.
